Everyone can attest to the fact that the 21st century is a dynamic one with changes happening so fast, making some people obsolete and opening opportunities for others. The changes in the 21stcentury affect every industry, section, and profession and the teaching profession is not left behind. In other words, to stay relevant in the 21st century as a teacher, we need to step up our game. There are certain areas of focus that I think every teacher should improve upon to be relevant in the 21st century.
- Technology: Technology is redefining learning and this affects not only the learners but teachers as well who must now make use of digital tools in disseminating knowledge. Inability to use technology will put you on a different plain from the students who you are teaching who are introduced to technology quite early, making it difficult for you to connect with them. Also, it puts you at a disadvantage for global competitiveness, particularly if you forget the fact that there are other teachers elsewhere that are doing fabulous things.
- Learning and Development: As teachers, we tend to think that learning is only for our students and we just fold our arms and do nothing regarding our personal learning. This is not going to work in the 21st century where knowledge becomes obsolete very fast. As a teacher you need to constantly invest in your professional and personal development. You should be update with new and latest developments in your field, go for trainings on improving your pedagogy. You don’t have to remain on the same level teaching the same subjects for years; aim to climb up the highest ladder in your profession and work towards it.
- Collaboration: The 21st century teacher is not one who stays in isolation but one who engages and interacts with other teachers to exchange ideas. A professional network is very important as it expands access and reach. If you have been lurking in a corner alone, then you need to come out of your hut and experience the larger world by networking.
- Prepare For The Future: As a teacher, as you prepare your students to take on the challenges of the future, you should also prepare yourself for the future. This will mean that you have to set goals for your career and other aspects of your life and make plans to achieve them. Whether they be skills shift or whatever challenges may arise in the future, you need to be adequately prepared so they don’t catch you unawares, bearing in my mind that the 21st century is characterized by changes that happen really fast.
